Satyrs Psycter
14" Tall - Item #V08

The satyrs were creatures of the wilderness and countryside, wild representations of fertility and sexual nature. They were closely associated with Dionysos, Gaia and Hermes. Satyrs were animal-like and human-like, with the tail of a horse, donkey ears, but with the body and legs of a human. In this scene, the satyrs are having a wild celebration with alcohol, involving acrobatic and balancing feats. Hermes is also depicted with a traveler's hat and cloak. The unique shape of the psycter vase was to hold wine and to keep wine cool. The body of the vase was filled with wine, and the whole thing was submersed in ice or snow for chilling.
