This magnificent ceramic piece in shape of a ram’s head was found in the city of Capua in Italy. It can be found in the British Museum, in London, UK.

This piece can be identified as a drinking cup because of the symposium picture that is painted along the neck of the vase showing the reclining guests drinking. The symbolism of the ram’s head is one of masculinity and strength. In addition, it shape of the vessel guaranteed heavy drinking since the vessel could not safely be set down.

The vase is painted in the classical Attic style of the red figure painting.

The red color represents the color of the clay that was used to make the ceramic. The black was applied after the vase was baked in an oven and was then scraped off to reveal the red figures in silhouette.

 This vessel is attributed in to Syriskos painter and dates back in the 5th century B.C.
