This late geometric lekythos has the designs divided into separate bands, some with the standard geometric motifs of meanders and cross hatches, as well as a frieze of stylized gazelles. The main scene on the front body of the vase illustrates the more developed detail of the emerging Orientalizing period, showing a battle scene with four warriors and Athena on the left side. The busy and detailed scene details full armor and weaponry, including a beautifully designed scorpion shield. The lekythos was made to hold liquids, frequently special oils for the body or for polishing fine leather. Some lekythoi were table ware, or buried as funerary offereings. |
