In Aphrodite's Chambers
5th Century bc, 12" Tall
Item #V68
This white ground vase shows Aphrodite, the Olympian goddess of beauty and love. She is often pictured with Eros, winged godlings, who, in this scene, are helping her with her toilet. The scene in her chamber is busy, with her maidens helping her dress. It is a peaceful, feminine scene, full of lush elegance.

White ground vases were notably more fragile than black or red figure vases as their white color as actually a slip that was applied to the ceramics, allowed to dry, and then painted upon. Many of the clay slips would disintegrate over time. White ground vases also used much more color than other vase styles. Most of the colors were pastels, but vibrant reds and blues were also used. This vase shows wonderful use of color and drape in the many folds of the women's robes.
