Item #V79
Persephone is the goddess of the underworld in Greek mythology. She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, goddess of the harvest, and that is why Persephone carries the stalks of wheat. Persephone was such a beautiful girl that everyone loved her, even Hades wanted her for himself. When she was a little girl, she was collecting, when suddenly the earth opened and Hades rose up from the underworld and kidnapped her. Her mother struck a deal whereby Persephone would return to the land of the living for part of the year, the Spring time. On the reverse of the vase is a depiction of the Sisyphus in his eternal punishment of rolling the boulder up the hill, only to have it roll to the bottom again.
